The Journal is one of the scientific periodicals of the Komarov Botanical Institute (at present belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences), founded as the garden of medicinal plants by Peter the Great in February 1714. The Journal under the name Novosti sistematiki nizshikh rastenii was founded in 1964 by the botanists of the Komarov Botanical Institute, St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). It represents a continuation of Botanicheskie materialy Instituta Sporovykh Rastenii Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada RS FSR, Petrograd, vol. 1–4(7), 1922–1926; Botanicheskie materialy otdela sporovyh rastenii Botanicheskogo Instituta imeni V. L.
