摘要

本文利用丰富、保存完好的新材料,描述了澳大利亚西南部始新统上Pallinup组的两个新属phymaraphiniid lithisttic海绵Twertupia gen. 11和Pickettispongia gen. 11。这两个属的模式材料,早先从保存较差的材料中描述,最初归因于Thamnospongia subglabra和Stachyspongia neoclavatela(在Twertupia种的情况下),以及tabelliformis(在Pickettispongia种的情况下)。这是始新世岩石中以及南半球保存完好的海绵体的第一个记录。我们讨论了现存的和化石的海绵动物代表和它们的地理分布,得出结论认为,这些海绵动物今天的出现是中生代特提斯分布的结果。

Eocene phymaraphiniid demosponges from South Western Australia: filling the gap
We describe two new genera of phymaraphiniid lithistid sponges Twertupia gen. nov. and Pickettispongia gen. nov. from the upper Eocene Pallinup Formation of South Western (SW) Australia based on new, rich and very well preserved material. Type material of these two genera, earlier described from poorly preserved material, were originally attributed to Thamnospongia subglabra and Stachyspongia neoclavatela (in case of species of Twertupia ), and to Discoderma tabelliformis (case of species of Pickettispongia ). This is the first record of bodily preserved phymaraphiniid sponges from Eocene rocks, as well as from the southern hemisphere. We discuss extant and fossil representatives of Phymaraphiniidae and their geographical distribution, concluding that the present day occurrences of these sponges are the result of a much larger Mesozoic Tethyan distribution.

期刊介绍: Acta Palaeontologica Polonica is an international quarterly journal publishing papers of general interest from all areas of paleontology. Since its founding by Roman Kozłowski in 1956, various currents of modern paleontology have been represented in the contents of the journal, especially those rooted in biologically oriented paleontology, an area he helped establish. In-depth studies of all kinds of fossils, of the mode of life of ancient organisms and structure of their skeletons are welcome, as those offering stratigraphically ordered evidence of evolution. Work on vertebrates and applications of fossil evidence to developmental studies, both ontogeny and astogeny of clonal organisms, have a long tradition in our journal. Evolution of the biosphere and its ecosystems, as inferred from geochemical evidence, has also been the focus of studies published in the journal.
