Predicated on the theory of unpleasant symptoms, the purpose of the current narrative review of the literature was to identify etiologic factors that influence cognitive impairment as a precursor to dementia in individuals with diabetes. Physiological, psychological, and situational factors were recognized as important life course components of cognitive impairment in later adulthood.
