Clinical experience of initial lacrimal passage irrigation and probing in 50 cases of neonatal dacryocystitis
Objective
To evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of initial lacrimal passage irrigation and probing in neonatal dacryocystitis.
Methods
Fifty cases (58 eyes) with neonatal dacryocystitis which had no effect by routine dacryocyst massage with local antibiotics ophthalmic solutions were treated with passage irrigation and probing under local anesthesia to observe the therapeutic effectiveness.
Results
In this study, the success rate of initial lacrimal passage irrigation and probing for 50 cases (58 eyes) at 2-6 months of age was 100% (19/19), 39 eyes were in aged 6-18 months, in which 28 eyes cured with once probing, 7 eyes cured with twice probing, 4 eyes failed.
Conclusions
In neonatal dacryocystitis, aged above 2 months, lacrimal passage irrigation and probing should be performed as soon as possible which is also safe and feasible.
