First, the main characteristics of geography teaching at both levels (elementary and secondary) are described, then the skills and competences that geography should develop at this level and how geoinformatics can help develop them. This is followed by an overview the current presence of basic cartographic and geoinformatics concepts found in the Geography textbooks and some examples of Hungarian research on the subject.
