: This article offers an overview of the reception and critical construction of the so-called romancero erudito in the collections of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Based on an analysis of the sources and criteria used by the editors of the different collections of this period, it postulates that the negative view of the romancero erudito as a mere versification of chronicles is a critical construction of romantic philology, which needed a countertext on which to profile the old romances , which were the true object of its interest
