Possible peripheral cutaneous hyperesthesia in two dogs

: We report two dogs with possible cutaneous hyperesthesia. Case 1, a two-year-old, spayed female chihuahua, showed pruritic behavior at the right neck and dorsal base of the pinna on palpation. Case 2, a one-year-old, castrated male American Cocker Spaniel, had pruritic behavior at the left head and disliked being palpated around the left earhole. MRI examination showed no abnormalities of the central nervous system in both cases. The symptoms gradually disappeared with the concurrent usage of drugs that effect the nervous systems, especially peripheral nerve pain killer, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, anticonvulsant, and Janus kinase inhibitor. Based on these findings, peripheral cutaneous hyperesthesia due to peripheral neuropathy was suspected and the therapeutic approach for hyperesthesia is discussed.
