THIS PAPER PRESENTS DATA ON DRIVER EVALUATION OF BRIGHTNESS, IN THE FORM OF VISIBILITY AND GLARE RATINGS OF REAR VIEW MIRROR REFLECTANCE LEVELS, BASED UPON ACTUAL DRIVING EXPERIENCES. THE EFFECTS OF ROADWAY TYPES AND VARIOUS AMBIENT LIGHTING CONDITIONS ARE DISCUSSED, AND RANGES OF ACCEPTABLE REFLECTANCE LEVELS ARE RECOMMENDED.
