L'A. analyse la structure de complements du nom ou d'adjectifs en anglais, formes sur le modele suivant: nom ou adj. + of + proposition gerondive (e.g. the possibility of someone crossing the border, She was aware of the mist running down the windows.). Il se propose d'analyser leur statut categoriel en comparaison avec des propositions completives introduites par that (e.g. The possibility that..., She was aware that...), en proposant que les complements avec of sont des propositions non-finies, tandis que les secondes sont finies. Ces occurrences de of sont alors considerees comme des completiviseurs nominaux.
