Vesicovaginal fistulas: Diagnosis and treatment

Abstract

Vesicovaginal fistula is an abnormal connection between the vagina and the bladder. The aim of the present study is to reiterate the diagnostic and therapeutic management of vesicovaginal fistulas through a systematic literature review. Pubmed was used as a search machine using as keywords: “vaginal fistula”, “vesicovaginal fistula”, “urogenital fistula” and finally 29 articles were included. As a result of the study, an integrated approach is considered necessary and will best serve the needs of women with vesicovaginal fistula. When a multidisciplinary team approach, consisting of urologists and gynecologists, is used, improvements in quality of life and patient satisfaction can be greater. Although more randomized clinical trials are required in order to compare therapeutic approaches of vesicovaginal fistulas.
