De la vraye escolle des jeunes Princes. L’éducation du prince dans les livres d’emblèmes des XVIe et XVIIe siècles

Abstract

• Although many emblems resemble mirrors of princes giving advice to future sovereigns, the question of the transmission of knowledge and the education of the prince is more rarely addressed. However, the authors of emblems deal with this issue in a very concrete way, focusing in particular on the influence –positive or negative– that teachers can exert on their pupils, even if most of them recognize the need for early education. Finally, the recommendations on teaching and pedagogy formulated in several emblems reveal the importance of the issue of the education of the prince in the Renaissance and the 17th century.
