Abstract

The Almadén mines were probably worked by the Celts, but doubtless by Romans, therefore they are more than two thousand years old. These operations have produced a third of the world's total amount of mercury. Today the deposits are exhausted and it is time to close the mine. It is necessary to preserve the memory of these operations by developping a mining museum. Almadén is a Monument of Mining Art, Historical, Industrial and Technological Heritage. In this manuscript we study the history and Mining Heritage of the main mercury mines in the world. We also review cases were a transformation into museum is developped.
