Abstract
The correct planning and execution of the case, adjustments of the prosthesis at appropriate times and also the maintenance of good hygiene contribute to the longevity of the rehabilitations performed on implants. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss the importance of patient guidance regarding the hygiene of full-arch prosthesis in mandibula, to increase the percentage of success rate in the short and long term. Searches were carried out in databases such as BVS, Google academic, between 2003 and 2019, with the keywords: “cleaning of implant-supported total prostheses”, “mucositis”, “peri-implantitis” selecting articles with full texts, published in Portuguese and English. Conventional or electric brushes, interdental brushes, needled floss or dental floss, dentifrices with low abrasiveness, mouthwash and hydro propulsion are the instruments of choice for cleaning by the patient. The dental surgeon can perform maintenance with plastic or teflon curettes, with rubber cups and a non-abrasive prophylactic paste or gold-plated ultrasound tips and, if necessary, can remove the prosthesis to be cleaned outside the mouth. It is important to exist a good relationship between patient and dentist so that the patient is free to report problems or difficulties in hygiene.
