Convex optimization of antenna power control for wireless cellular systems

Abstract

Interference is the major limiting factor in the performance of wireless cellular systems, introducing an error floor and restricting the number of users. Antenna power control is an important method to mitigate interference, but current ad hoc power control schemes cannot at the same time be optimal, fast and able to accommodate many practical constraints. We formulate the general power control problem for both CDMA and FDMA systems, and transform it into a convex optimization problem with efficient algorithms. For the widely used propagation model, the convex optimization formulation optimizes the quality of service and controls interference in an optimal, fast and versatile way.
