The second, more serious point, is the poorly crafted introduction that drifts off the main purpose of the book, which is to provide a personal view of the Middle East rather than to highlight one particular incident in Iran that will quickly date the publication. All said, however, the author is to be commended for his honesty, humour and humility – he makes light of his own considerable achievements without a hint of the self-serving hubris found in some military memoirs – Field Marshal Lord Guthrie’s recent work representing an honourable exception.
