Abstract

Determination of the cutting force during metal machining process is of particular importance because of its controlling influence to cutting deformation, tool wear, tool life, as well as the quality of machined part. Numerous attempts have been made to approach this problem with different methods, such as analytical, empirical, numerical, hybrid models. But the complexity of cutting process makes it extremely difficult to predict in a precise manner or even assess the performance of various models. In this paper, previous research including state-of-the-art publications in predicting models of cutting force during metal machining is briefly reviewed. The strengths and weaknesses of different models are analyzed by concerning several topics. Based on the review and assessment of available models, it could be concluded that numerical and hybrid models will be increasingly concerned due to the development of information technology though analytical and empirical models have dominated in the past few decades. Finally, this work also aims at giving a perspective in such area in the future, based on the known researches.
