This process is done by sending the message Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request_ to the destination with the value of Time to Live or commonly referred to as TTL which is increasing. The route shown is a list of router interfaces found on the path between the host and destination. The purpose of pinging and traceroute is to find out the status of up or down in the network.
