By introducing defects, light is forbidden to propagate inside the periodic structure, which will act as a mirror throughout. This property can be used to construct various application as we can attenuate any particular frequency band. The defect is created by changing the material of the layer of the crystal, thereby disturbing its periodicity to design a optical filter that operates in visible spectrum.
