Participação Popular na Organização da Parada do Orgulho LGBT de São Paulo

Abstract

São Paulo Pride, the biggest parade in Brazil and, for many years, the biggest in the world, conciliates interests of different stakeholders: social movements, civil society organizations, companies and the government. Nowadays, the only way for civil society and social movements to participate in the organization process is through working groups inside APOGLBT, the association in charge of the Pride organization. The present study aims to identify the limitations of this type, exploring other possibilities of participation during the organization of the event. In comparison to other mass gatherings in São Paulo, Pride is historically not recognised as a public policy by the municipal administration. The introduction and implementation of participative policies could tackle this issue, although it wouldn’t put an end to the inequality of power inside representative democracy and capitalist state.
