Abstract
A data structure for model representation and a novel technique for model manipulation are presented. The representation is a hierarchical one that represents the vital details of a model unit and their respective (input and output parameters and preconditions. The manipulation technique is based on the planning paradigm of artificial intelligence (AI). Two levels of manipulation are relevant: model planning and meta-model-planning. The former is responsible for selecting and sequencing model units to satisfy a decision-problem at hand. The latter deals with extraordinary situations in which a replanning effort needs to be undertaken. The approach is implemented on a Lisp machine.<>
