Abstract
This paper proposes a method of parametric modeling for insulator leakage current employing synchronous detection technique. Since insulator surface degradation is characterized by changes in the harmonic content of the surface leakage current, synchronous detection serves as an efficient methodology with low computational burden, to compress the signal through parametric modeling. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with other well known parametric modeling techniques such as sine fitting and Kalman filtering, and the advantages of the proposed method have been highlighted. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method is able to estimate the true frequency with high precision and has the lowest computation time. The high precision and low computational time of the synchronous detection technique makes it a suitable algorithm for insulator leakage current monitoring through field devices.
