Abstract

Inter-regional and transnational grid interconnection is an essential attribute for today's clean energy sector advancement. This paper examines the East African electrical energy supply structure, regional load demand endowment and power supply status. The study examines the progress achieved in integrating the East Africa power grids as well as the future possibilities for a more integrated network across the region that could form a major artery for the Cairo-Cape interconnection. The study also examines the benefits that could be realized such as in enabling individual countries achieve energy transition, increased electricity supply, enhanced energy security through supply diversification, cost reduction as well as allow for increased utilization of intermittent renewable energy through optimizing generation across a pooled region.
