Abstract

Bamboo is characterized by its excellent elasticity, split property and water absorption property. We consider that bamboo-ice composite system can be used electrical insulating system at cryogenic region. In this paper we will discuss relation between electrical insulating properties of bamboo-ice composite system and the structure of bamboo. Ac breakdown strength of bamboo-ice composite system increases with increasing water content. The vessel in bamboo is a Weak point for electrical breakdown. We consider that ac breakdown strength increases when the vessel is filled with ice. Position and shape of breakdown path is strongly influenced by existence of water. In this paper we will also discuss effect of ion in water on breakdown characteristics of bamboo-ice composite system at low temperature. Bamboo immersed with distilled water shows higher ac breakdown strength than that immersed with tap water does. Ions in water may play some role in ac breakdown process.
