Abstract

This article describes the dispute between Portugal and India, with emphasis on military strategy, which culminated in the fall of the Portuguese territories of India and the end of the 500-year-old portuguese presence in that region. After decades of dispute and in the face of portuguese intransigence in a mediated solution, the failure of its diplomatic maneuver to ensure the blockade of the use of military force, India unleashed Operation Vijay, the military invasion of the territories of Goa, Damão and Diu with disproportionate force in the face of a reduced and obsolete military capability expressed in the Sentinel Plan.
