Eualuation of a Contacting Phased Array for Hyperthermic Treatment of Lung Tumours

Abstract

Hyperthermia is now recognised as a valuable aid to orncologists in the treatment of many cancers [1,21. The usual therapy regime combines radiotherapy or chemotherapy with hyperthermia, and the ideal treatmernt with microwave hyperthermia would allow a tumour to be heated to 430C or higher without damaging any healthy tissue. Localised hyperthermia techniques are an attempt to reach this ideal situation, while regional and whole body hyperthermia are more systemic. Since each tumour presents a different problem (e.g. shape and location), it is ur-nlikely that an ideal solution will be achieved, certainly not from a single type of applicator system.
