This may have been Isichei’s intention, but, given the availability of a growing number of encyclopaedias with short essays on much of her subject matter, an interpretative essay would have been more useful. Nevertheless, Isichei should be commended for attempting such a difficult task, and for writing a series of books that make African religions accessible to undergraduates – a service of great importance to Africanists.
