Abstract
Road intersections are good locations for implementing a smart and adaptive traffic management system depending on the current traffic situation. To allow these junctions to regulate vehicular flow in a coordinated manner, accurate and up-to-date data exchange between infrastructure and intelligent vehicles must be considered. To address the traffic management problem of an urban section, this study proposes a traffic management scheme for a two-way, four-road segment, and low-density intersections (TMS-2W4R) that enables real-time information exchange between intelligent vehicles and roadside unit (RSU) to facilitate an adaptive and smooth transition of vehicles at an intersection. TMS-2W4R receives vehicular direction demands and satisfies their requests by utilizing the index coding-based transmission scheme. Our simulation results show that applying TMS-2W4R at every roadside unit (RSU) can improve the road map data dissemination along with its direction request by 71% in terms of transmitted data size. Through our analysis, we have also shown the adaptability and flexibility of TMS-2W4R with respect to the current traffic scenario at the junction.
