Abstract
Discrete cosine transform (DCT) is commonly used in image and video compression. DCT approximations are excellent alternatives to reduce the computational complexity of exact DCT with good coding performance. In this article we review and compare some of the most interesting multiplication-free approximations in the literature and their hardware cost.
