Abstract

We present the first electro-mechanical nanophotonic optical switch. A bi-state photonic band gap (PBG) structure was dynamically driven by a MEMS actuator to control the light propagation. An extinction ratio of 11 dB was demonstrated between the transmission state and reflection state for 1.56 /spl mu/m wavelength.
