to apply its results to significant issues in Lessing’s thought that fall outside of its scope. most importantly: if Lessing is not the rationalist critic of religion that he is sometimes portrayed to be, then how are we to understand his final public statement on religion in the Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts? since substantial portions of this text were composed immediately prior to those considered in the present study, consideration of this work would be an important supplement to Kerber’s highly original claims.
