Abstract

Root locus is one of the techniques used for analysis and design of control systems. From control system design parameters such as percent overshoot and settling time, the damping ratio and the location of specific poles can be defined. A specific gain can be selected from the root locus for a certain damping ratio and closed loop response. Phase lead and lag type compensators can be designed satisfying more than one control system parameters. In this paper, a root locus design approach is presented using MATLAB; phase lead and lag type compensators are designed based on transient and steady state specifications.
