Abstract

J-aggregates of cyanine dyes show a sharp absorption peak, called J- band, below the transition band of monomers [1,2]. The band is due to the transition of excitons delocalized over an aggregate by intermolecular dipole interaction. A simple model of N identical molecules aligned in a one- dimensional chain has been proposed to explain the optical spectrum of the J- aggregates [3-5].
