Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) world is developing rapidly, yet seamless integration into our daily lives is lacking. Vendor-specific products tend to restrict customers to their software applications, due to their inherent steep learning curve. We develop the Mixed Reality Control Panel (MRCP) system to address this gap by offering a cross-platform, open-source, vendor-neutral, mixed reality software application capable of interacting with headless, IoT devices. The MRCP application, Smart Parking Meter, and Smart Lock are developed and tested against existing solutions. The duration to perform each action is compared as well as the benefits of additional smart features. Having a mixed reality interface allows for a agnostic and quick interaction with the IoT devices. Early development decisions on cross-platform and vendor-neutral enable future scalability. As a result, both devices are deemed viable solutions for future smart city integrations. Further development will take place for the MRCP system. While others can benefit from the project by incorporating mixed reality as a solution for Smart environments to bridge the gap between IoT and our daily lives.
