Thirty five bacterial isolates were isolated from textile dyeing industry effluents. Proficient and rapid dye degradation was identified in thirteen isolates. Microbial consortia were developed on the basis of dye degrading competence of the strains. Nearly 60%–95% degradation was achieved in less than about 72 h in these isolates tested on individual dyes. Promising results were obtained with mixed dye concentration. The dye concentration, pH, temperature and time of degradation were optimized. 16S rRNA gene amplification was carried out for the sequencing and identification of these strains. TLC, HPLC, FTIR and GC-MS analysis were carried out to confirm the presence of aromatic amines and to aid the data supporting the course of degradation.
