D elerin g o n th e P ro m se o f D em o cacy Many educators can recite the faults of their schools or universiti es, but far fewer can recognize and develop existi ng strengths to benefi t a wider audience. Sukhwant Jhaj has craft ed a refreshing new look at how imaginati ve leadership and a shift in perspecti ve can propel insti tuti ons to reach at-risk or underrepresented members of their communiti es. Delivering on the Promise of Democracy pulls back the curtain on seven high-performing universiti es to reveal which daily decisions, including listening to the community, embracing confl ict, and implementi ng eff ecti ve strategies through routi ne, guide administrators in achieving excepti onal results. Through in-depth interviews that off er a close look at these seven universiti es, Jhaj traces a new trajectory for higher educati on: a call to questi on a university’s eff ecti veness through its accessibility to the community it serves.
