Abstract

An ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse radar sensor consisting of a system-on-a-chip radar transceiver and planar differential antennas has been implemented and applied to the contactless detection of the respiration activity of adult and infant. The field operational tests show that the radar sensor tracks the respiratory rate and pattern of person under test through the contactless detection of thorax and abdomen movements in a range of conditions, allowing the continuous-time non-invasive monitoring of adult and infant prone to obstructive apneas or other respiratory diseases.
