Passive devices store GPS location, speed and time. Once the vehicle returns to a predestined point, the device is removed and the data downloaded to a computer for evaluation. By this we can get arrival and departure locations of the students. Active devices also collect the same information, but usually transmit the data in near-real-time via cellular or satellite networks to a computer or data center for evaluation. It is used to track the location of a vehicle from organizing itself.
