Abstract

An energy stability criterion is used to study the stability of deformations of a compressible elastic half-space. A minimization problem is formulated in an unbounded domain, and the first and second variation conditions are derived for this problem. Algebraic stability conditions are derived for general compressible isotropic materials, as well as for neo-Hookean class of Hadamard materials.
