Abstract
We propose a newly developed “phase-area method” to gauge the variations of multidirectional strain using a circularly-polarized (CP) patch antenna sensor excited by a proximity-coupled microstrip line in this paper. In order to minimize the physical size of sensor, high-dielectric-constant RO3010 dielectric laminate is used as the substrate for the antenna sensor, thus the sensor owns a small patch size of 17.66mm×18.46mm. A proof-of-concept prototype has been conducted to reveal the principle of multidirectional strain detecting through the concept of orthogonal modes (TM10 & TM01). Very high sensitivities of −106.8 and +71.2 ppm/με have been achieved for the x- and y-directional strain, respectively.
