It is noted that photonics has some advantages that assure it a place in array control. In digital control signal distribution and RF power distribution, one can expect to see early applications of photonic technology. Control signal distribution complicates present-day arrays, and is a relatively simple function to do photonically. RF signal distribution using photonics can, in principle, have the required accuracy, but losses in modulation and detection will require its use with solid-state modules. The cost and reduction in dynamic range may limit this application for some systems.
