Abstract

Using electric power in ships is not a novel concept in marine systems. First usage of electric power on ship board for illumination purpose, going through electric ships that using electric motor as propulsion system till reach to the concept of All Electric Ships (AES) that allow all the ship power source feed both propulsion and auxiliary loads. The great demand of electric power in commercial and naval ships leads to use different types of electric motors and the revolution of using power electronics helps in drive and control these motors. That lead to enhancement the motor performance to meet the high power required and get best performance. Switched reluctance motor recently used in traction system with constrains due to its high torque ripples. This paper introduces advantage motors that might be used in ship propulsion system and introduced the effect of increasing the number of phases for switched reluctance motor (SRM) beside using the control techniques to overcome the most disadvantage of switched reluctance motor that is torque ripples and proposed to replace the switched reluctance motors instead of motors used in ship propulsion system.
