Is cloud computing essential to the future of pervasive services?

Abstract

Cloud computing is a new paradigm for deploying computing/information services, which is based pervasive and on demand access to computing utilities, an abstraction of unlimited computing resources, and a usage-based payment model made users essentially "rent" virtual resources and service and pay for what they use. Such a paradigm can significantly impact the nature, complexity and scale of pervasive/mobile services as well as their impacts. In fact, many have suggested that pervasive services may be the killer application for Clouds. However, there are also concerns that limitations of current cloud offerings, lack of standards and regulations, and issues such as vendor lock-in may limit pervasiveness and stifle creativity. The goal of this panel is debate that role and impact of cloud computing on pervasive services.
