Abstract

Space-division multiplexed (SDM) systems use multiple spatial-paths to increase the capacity carried by an optical fiber. The ability to integrate spatial-paths enables the SDM versions of components such as optical amplifiers to provide significant cost and efficiency advantages over the alternative, duplicated single-mode fiber systems.
