Abstract

Malaria infection is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium. According to the latest report of the World Health Organization, this disease is one of the top 10 causes of death in lowincome countries and the foremost public health problem worldwide, with more than 212 million new cases and 429,000 deaths per year. The report also states that the disease is endemic to 91 countries, including the countries of the American continent with the exception of USA, Costa Rica and Argentina.1
