The motor protection lab-scale test bench setup is established at CPUT, CSAEMS lab and tested protection functions using both hardwired and IEC61850 GOOSE messaging signals. The simulation results are analyzed for overload, short-circuit, overvoltage and thermal loading conditions and its shows that GOOSE communication is supervisor to hardwired signals. Abstract

Three-phase induction motor forms an integral part of production and manufacturing activities in the industry. Motors regularly fail in production and manufacturing plants due to lack/outdated motor protection mechanism in place. This paper discusses implementation of the IEC61850-7-4 standard and its GOOSE message application for motor protection relays.
