A variety of literacy practices involving family literacy practices, community cultural literacy, and social background were discussed. A number of studies showed that family literacy practices in first and second languages influence language learners’ literacy learning and school performance positively or negatively. Thus, the role of families and parents at home for language-minority learners’ literacy development and academic success in school might be very important.
