Data acquired at monitoring stations showed high levels of Ozone and very high levels of Hydrocarbons. Two years later, we were asked to study the episodes. Some specialists had argued that monitored data, although validated and accepted by authorities, seemed affected by errors. Being impossible to exclude a fault, we thought to reduce the range of plausible malfunctions. In fact, environmental data sets, acquired at monitoring stations, may be analyzed in the frequency domain to reveal periodic components that do not emerge after a preliminary study of time series.
