Abstract

Emergency contraception is an intervention aimed to prevent an unplanned or unintended pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or where inadequate contraception has been used. It is only recommended for occasional use, and patients should be advised regarding regular and preferably long-term contraception if suitable. The request for emergency contraception is a frequent presentation in general practice. Around 40% of pregnancies worldwide are estimated to be unplanned, and a significant proportion of unplanned pregnancies result in termination, leading to avoidable distress. Therefore, it is paramount that healthcare professionals understand the available methods of emergency contraception. This article will cover the available methods, looking at their indications, use, efficacy, risks, and benefits.
