Abstract

Structural engineering is an art and knowledge or wisdom of designing structures with safety, economy, durability and serviceability. Conceptual thinking based on structural engineering principles is necessary for the entire study. The performance and behaviour of the building during normal functional use as well as during extreme disastrous events such as earthquake and windstorms adhere to the latest Codal provisions. The scope of this project is to study the influence of backstay effect on the behaviour and performance of a building compared and analyzed with a building without such effect. Different models are prepared in this study by varying the number of podium storeys in the structure. In this research, a comparative study is also done on the tower with a podium with a shear wall at the periphery of the podium and without a shear wall at the periphery of the podium. The structure has a medium soil type and is G + 23 storeys tall. The equivalent static method and response spectrum method are used to analyse the structures. ETABS-2020 (Extended Three-Dimensional Analysis of Building Systems) is used in this study for analysis of structures. It is concluded from this study that the effect of backstay diaphragm results in increased mass, therefore resulting in a proportional increase in the base shear. The effect of drift is in the permissible limit due to the effect of backstay.
