The length of the review period includes the time taken to complete revisions, which averaged 12 months, and is a function of the manuscript quality and the number of revisions required prior to the final decision. Many authors become frustrated with the amount of time it takes to review, accept, and publish their work in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
